CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Vinny the Weasel

A warm, throbbing pain pounded the back of Benjamin’s head. He opened his eyes. The trees above swirled round and round. What happened? He tried to make sense of his surroundings. He thought he was dreaming and that he’d wake up in his nice, comfortable bed…but the trees kept spinning.

He watched a blurry red leaf fall from a high branch and spiral slowly down to his face. Flop! The wetness gently smacked his eyes and nose. He grabbed the leaf and sat up. “Ouch!” Pain stabbed his forehead. He felt woozy. He scanned the ground around him and tried to focus on a hollow tree stump. It became clearer. A few more blinks returned his vision to normal.

As he stood up he saw his backpack dangling from a low branch. “Oh yeah…” He remembered why he was in the middle of Persly’s Woods. Benjamin narrowly missed stepping on Squeak, passed out by the toe of his shoe. “Okay, now which way was I going?” Every tree looked the same. “C’mon, Ben, think!”

He took a step back and his heel stepped on something squishy. He looked down and jumped in fear. He saw the diamond backs of two rattlesnakes with their tails slowly squirming. He scrambled to reach into his bag but noticed chunks were missing from the snakes’ backs … maybe bitten out. He knew they were dead. “That’s right - snakes came through here… thousands of them!” He looked closely at the bite. “Wh-who could’ve done this?”

The new-morning light gave him a clear view of the forest. ”The sun!” He knew he was supposed to head east. One of the things he fortunately learned from his grandfather was telling the direction by the sun. “Thanks, Grandpa.” He started walking east through the trees. His grandfather’s critical situation came to his mind. I hope he lives through all this. I miss him so badly! … I know he wanted to tell me something last night in the hospital. But what?
