Your Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals
You can find these worksheets at the end of this chapter and full-size versions at EncoreCurve.com/worksheets.
We are going to start with the later time frameâStep 1âof the Encore Road Map Exercise described above. To help you focus on specific actions for your biggest goals, Step 1 lists only a three-year period. But donât allow the three years to limit your dreaming. This period will launch the most important things you want to accomplish during the rest of your lifeâyour encore. These are sometimes referred to as your âbig, hairy, audacious goalsâ (BHAG) or your âbucket list.â There is no pressure to perform right away since, according to our exercise, you will not accomplish these goals until at least three years from now. So just dream big. Think for a minute about the biggest, wildest goals and dreams you have ever thought of. Assume there are no barriers to these dreams. Use the ideas you wrote in your GPS Navigator as well as any related ideas or new ones that come to mind. These goals could range from traveling somewhere to starting a mission venture to learning something new to giving away a lot of money. Donât limit yourself. Set a timer for five minutes, and write these dreams down as fast as you can. Donât think too hard or try to edit. Just write down what pops into your mind. Ready? Go.
Did you come back after five minutes? Or did you keep writing? I know you might not be finished, but thatâs OK. I also know that you may have written down things that surprised you. Thatâs a good thing. Now I want you to look at your list and circle the three most important goals you wrote down. If you could accomplish these three things, how would you feel about your significance? Did you come up with something different or more specific than what you wrote in the GPS Navigator? We often continue to fine-tune or expand our dreams as we review them, and this is a really good reason to review them often!
Itâs really exciting when you let yourself dream and think big thoughts like this. Now I want to bring you back to reality with Step 2. We need to figure out how we are going to make all these wonderful aspirations come true.
