CHAPTER SIX

WEDNESDAY was a repeat of Monday, the only thing different being the overwhelming urge to kiss Harrison hello and goodbye whenever she saw him. Amelia was glad when Thursday came and it was Harrison’s turn to stay at home and look after his daughter. Amelia caught up with Mrs Deveraux at the hospital, pleased to see the housekeeper up and about.

‘I can go home tomorrow,’ she told Amelia the instant she saw her.

‘That’s fantastic news.’

‘Yes, and thank you, dear, so much for helping Harrison and Yolanda.’

Amelia smiled. ‘It’s been my pleasure.’ And it had. She’d lived a few days of utter happiness and it had provided her with memories that would definitely be keeping her warm on the cold English winter nights.

When she finished work, pleased it was a day shift, she headed home, eager to relax and put her feet up. At least, she told herself she was eager. She wasn’t scheduled to see Harrison or Yolanda that day, Harrison not needing her babysitting services, and that thought was highly depressing. She liked seeing them, both of them, but not that night. Besides, it was almost Yolanda’s bedtime.

After she’d had a quick shower and changed into a hot pink tracksuit, all nice and snuggly, there was a knock at her door. When she opened it, she was astonished to see Harrison and Yolanda there.

‘We got dinner,’Yolanda announced, as she marched into Amelia’s apartment, quite at home.

‘We thought it was the least we could do to say thank you,’ Harrison said after she’d invited them in. He’d had an overwhelming urge to see her and now that he looked at her, in that bright tracksuit, he was extremely glad he’d given in.

‘Ooh. Is pi-i-in-n-nk.’ Yolanda ran her hands up and down Amelia’s arms and Harrison couldn’t believe how jealous he felt of his daughter, being able to touch Amelia when she wanted to.

‘I thought you’d like it.’ Amelia smiled. ‘So, do we need to eat this while it’s hot? I’ll get some plates. Yolanda, can you help me to set the table, please?’

Yolanda followed Amelia around and Harrison simply watched the two of them. With Yolanda wearing pink and white pyjamas, they were almost like two peas in a pod … just different sizes, of course.

Once more he kept the conversation light, prompting a tired Yolanda to tell Amelia what they’d made.

‘A big pickshure for Mrs D.’ She stretched her arms out wide.

‘A welcome-home poster,’ Harrison added. ‘And it kept us busy for a good portion of the day.’

‘I can well believe it.’

They exchanged hospital news and when Yolanda had yawned twice, Amelia told Harrison to take her home. Reluctantly, he picked his daughter up, the child resting her head on his shoulder. He didn’t want to go. He wanted to stay, to prolong the time he had to spend with Amelia. Yes, Mrs D. was coming back tomorrow and he was looking forward to that, but it also meant that Amelia’s help would be scaled back and he wouldn’t see her nearly as much.
