Chapter Eight

Fighting to control herself, knowing that her earlier admonition to remain calm and collected was the only way to go when her body was so determined to betray her, Clem took a deep breath and said, “C’mon. Let’s go sit on the futon and talk.”

In the few seconds it took them to walk to the futon and sit, she managed to calm herself a bit. She purposely sat facing him so that he would be forced to leave a few inches between them, because she still didn’t trust herself to withstand this enormous physical pull between them.

And she needed a clear head!

Taking another deep breath, she said, “Before we can decide what we’re going to do about this, uh, thing between us, there’s something I have to tell you. And since I don’t believe in beating around the bush, I’ll come right out and say it. I do want you, but I have no interest in getting married or making a permanent commitment of any kind. If—” Oh, God, it was hard to say this. But it had to be done! “If,” she repeated firmly, “that’s what you’re looking for, we should… probably call it quits right now.”

Luke looked at her silently for so long, her heart slowly sank. She prepared herself to act as if it didn’t matter when he said he preferred to call it quits.

After agonizingly slow seconds, he smiled. “Incredible. You stole the words right out of my mouth.”

Surprise momentarily robbed her of any comeback other than a gaping, “Really?”

“Really.”

“That…that’s wonderful!” Although he’d said exactly what she was hoping to hear, she still didn’t know what to say.

Apparently, neither did he.

Then he chuckled. “Do you feel as awkward as I do?”

She laughed, too, and a great sense of relief washed over her. “Yes. Why is that, do you think?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Maybe it’s because it’s so unusual for a man and woman to talk about sex,” she said thoughtfully.

His eyes twinkled. “You mean, as opposed to doing it?”

“Exactly.”

“Well, I’m all for jumping right into bed and getting to the fun part,” he teased, “but I want to be sure we both understand exactly what it is we’re doing.”

“Oh, I agree,” she said fervently. “It’s definitely best to get everything straight up front.”

“Because we don’t want any misunderstandings afterward.”

“Absolutely not.”

“So,” he continued, “we agree we want to have a physical relationship, right?”

“Right, but that’s it. No strings. No promises.” She grinned. “No L words.”

“And no M words,” Luke added with a smile.

“Or even C words,” Clem said.

“I hate C words,” Luke agreed. “I’m committed to too many things as it is.”

Clem took a deep breath. “What a relief! You can’t imagine how glad I am that we agree. Wanna shake on it?” She extended her right hand.

They solemnly shook hands, then, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, Luke said, “How do you feel about S words?”

Clem grinned. “S words are fine. In fact, they’re more than fine.”

Laughing, he reached for her. “So what are we waiting for?”

Seconds later she was in his arms.
