Chapter Eight
Fighting to control herself, knowing that her earlier admonition to remain calm and collected was the only way to go when her body was so determined to betray her, Clem took a deep breath and said, âCâmon. Letâs go sit on the futon and talk.â
In the few seconds it took them to walk to the futon and sit, she managed to calm herself a bit. She purposely sat facing him so that he would be forced to leave a few inches between them, because she still didnât trust herself to withstand this enormous physical pull between them.
And she needed a clear head!
Taking another deep breath, she said, âBefore we can decide what weâre going to do about this, uh, thing between us, thereâs something I have to tell you. And since I donât believe in beating around the bush, Iâll come right out and say it. I do want you, but I have no interest in getting married or making a permanent commitment of any kind. Ifââ Oh, God, it was hard to say this. But it had to be done! âIf,â she repeated firmly, âthatâs what youâre looking for, we should⦠probably call it quits right now.â
Luke looked at her silently for so long, her heart slowly sank. She prepared herself to act as if it didnât matter when he said he preferred to call it quits.
After agonizingly slow seconds, he smiled. âIncredible. You stole the words right out of my mouth.â
Surprise momentarily robbed her of any comeback other than a gaping, âReally?â
âReally.â
âThatâ¦thatâs wonderful!â Although heâd said exactly what she was hoping to hear, she still didnât know what to say.
Apparently, neither did he.
Then he chuckled. âDo you feel as awkward as I do?â
She laughed, too, and a great sense of relief washed over her. âYes. Why is that, do you think?â
He shrugged. âI donât know.â
âMaybe itâs because itâs so unusual for a man and woman to talk about sex,â she said thoughtfully.
His eyes twinkled. âYou mean, as opposed to doing it?â
âExactly.â
âWell, Iâm all for jumping right into bed and getting to the fun part,â he teased, âbut I want to be sure we both understand exactly what it is weâre doing.â
âOh, I agree,â she said fervently. âItâs definitely best to get everything straight up front.â
âBecause we donât want any misunderstandings afterward.â
âAbsolutely not.â
âSo,â he continued, âwe agree we want to have a physical relationship, right?â
âRight, but thatâs it. No strings. No promises.â She grinned. âNo L words.â
âAnd no M words,â Luke added with a smile.
âOr even C words,â Clem said.
âI hate C words,â Luke agreed. âIâm committed to too many things as it is.â
Clem took a deep breath. âWhat a relief! You canât imagine how glad I am that we agree. Wanna shake on it?â She extended her right hand.
They solemnly shook hands, then, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth, Luke said, âHow do you feel about S words?â
Clem grinned. âS words are fine. In fact, theyâre more than fine.â
Laughing, he reached for her. âSo what are we waiting for?â
Seconds later she was in his arms.
