On Monday morning Luke felt he had to say something to Pastor Grant. He drew the man aside. “Pastor, you must know that I’m Joe Thurstan’s brother.”

“Yes,” he said immediately. “I suspected it the first time you appeared in church. That afternoon Amelia confirmed it.”

This was a mystery to Luke. “You might have said something.”

“No,” Jacob said. “That’s Amelia’s decision. It’s not easy being a man, a dad, a preacher, a friend. One role doesn’t fit all. A dad can’t preach to his daughter. A dad can’t always be a friend to his child. Roles often clash. As with you. You’re Joe’s brother, and yet you are your own self.”

Again Luke had that feeling. “I’m not here only as Joe’s brother. I’m here as me.”

“And what exactly is me?”

Their gazes locked. Finally Luke scoffed. “I think you just took on the role of preacher.” “Friend, too, I hope.”

Luke nodded. “Thank you.” He took a deep breath. “In that case, did Joe do something to cause you concern?”

“Not at all. I met him only one time and briefly when Amelia brought him by to introduce him to me and her mother. I had nothing against him. But he is Amelia’s subject, not mine. You see, Luke, we each have our scars. Some wounds heal slowly. I have to let Amelia make her decisions and leave it up to her and God. I had to let go of my son. He was killed by the Japanese. The bomber could even have been a relation of my wife, whom I love more than life. I had to let Andy go, forgive. Oh, I have my scars. But I go on. I preach as much truth as I can. I know God’s presence and the presence of evil more completely than ever before.” Luke nodded. He understood.

The pastor added, “I’m most blessed to be able to comfort others. I couldn’t in the same way if I hadn’t lost Andy, our first child. Oh how I’ve prayed to see the war over in other people’s eyes! It’s still in your eyes, Luke.”

Luke couldn’t dispute that. His emotions were still at war. He accepted Joe’s death, but he didn’t like the memory of their last time together. The memory of his own immature reactions to Joe’s stealing Penny from him. In reality, Joe didn’t and couldn’t steal Penny. She went willingly.
