CHAPTER SEVEN

AFTER an hour and a half of concentrating on teaching and practising defensive manoeuvres, Lauren didn’t even have to think.

Automatically, she reached up and wrapped both hands around her assailant’s wrist and with a speed and force that she’d never have dreamed of using on a volunteer, bent forward and twisted to send the man sailing over her shoulder.

Even as he crashed in an ignominious heap at her feet she was whirling to run for the door, but then her brain kicked in to override her reflexes.

Suddenly she realised who it was she’d just summarily flipped onto his back.

‘Marc!’ she exclaimed in horror, immediately rushing forward to see if he was all right.

Had she injured him? She’d certainly thrown him hard enough to give him a whole host of bruises. And he was making no attempt to get up by himself, hadn’t even moved, and that worried her. Had he landed hard enough to break something? Fractured a vertebra, perhaps? Had she paralysed him?

To her relief, when he finally took her hand his grip seemed as firm as ever and she allowed herself a brief surge of relief, but she was still concerned enough that she wondered if she should suggest that he go for an X-ray.

Before she could brace herself to help him to his feet he suddenly gave a swift tug, catching her totally unprepared. With one brief shriek she tumbled helplessly forward, landing straight on top of him with enough force to empty her lungs.

Frozen with disbelief, she found herself sprawled across his chest with her nose buried in the angle between his neck and shoulder.

It took several endless seconds before she even thought about trying to draw a breath, then wished she hadn’t bothered. The scent of his skin was every bit as enticing as she remembered and as for the lean, muscular body trapped underneath her…

‘Oh!’ she gasped, struggling to peel herself off him, suddenly all too aware of the way their legs were entwined.

‘Whoa!’ he said, swiftly grasping her waist in both hands so that she couldn’t move.

‘What are you doing?’ she demanded breathlessly, lifting her head far enough to glare down at his face. ‘Why did you do that?’

‘Just evening the score out a bit,’ he said with an unexpectedly wicked glint in his quicksilver eyes. ‘You’ve been throwing me around all evening so turnabout’s fair play.’

‘Very funny,’ she snapped, renewing her struggle. ‘Now let me up.’

‘Hang on, Lauren.’ He swiftly tightened his grip again to hold her still. ‘Let’s do this carefully, please. I have no wish to sing soprano.’

All of a sudden she realised exactly which area her knee was threatening and she cringed with embarrassment, her face almost incandescent with heat.

Even though she wished fervently that she could disappear into thin air, she had no idea what he wanted her to do so she had to remain perfectly still. Her nose was almost buried in the V neck of his T-shirt now, and one crazy corner of her brain was noting that she had a close-up view of the start of those tantalising dark whorls of hair.
