CHAPTER SIX

ELISSA hesitated in the pub doorway. Inside she could hear the hubbub of voices. It reminded her of the afternoon and the mass of reporters seething round her.

"It's OK," Daniel murmured, moving up close beside her. "Quite safe. There's a table over there." He ushered her gently towards it. "I'll find a menu."

The sun was almost gone now, colouring the ripples on the water rose-red to merge with the yellow of the lights from inside that were reflected on the river.

She could see Daniel, head and shoulders above the others round the bar, his fair hair still ruffled.

After a moment, he began to walk back to where she was sitting. He was carrying two menus and handed her one as he sat down.

"What do you recommend?" she asked, taking the leather-covered list he offered.

"Any of the fish. It's always good, and fresh. Caught this morning usually. The crab's delicious. The salmon superb. The plaice out of this world ... There's nothing like locally caught produce — so much better than the stuff that's had to come speeding down the motorway, prepacked and having seen better days."

"All right! You've convinced me!" Elissa laughed, and after having a quick look down the menu, she finally decided on the plaice stuffed with crab and prawns.

"Better than the meals at Trevellian House?" Daniel asked when they were served ten minutes later.

"Would I dare to criticise?" she hedged, tucking into her meal with great relish.

It had been a long time since lunch and she was starving.

"Knowing you, yes."

"But you don't know me," she replied.

He shrugged slightly.

"Don't I?" he said softly, leaning across the table towards her.

"So the delicate little patient isn't resting after all. What a bit of luck."

The unwelcome voice jarred through her, and she raised her eyes to see Mark Chivers standing over her.

Behind him, her face bright with triumph, followed the girl reporter Elissa had seen that afternoon in the garden.

"I'm sorry, Lissa." Daniel's face was grim. "Shall we go?"

"I haven't finished my meal," she said automatically.

"But ..."

"And I certainly don't intend to run away."

Daniel relaxed back into his chair and lifted his wine glass, a slight smile spreading across his face.

"No," he agreed. "You're absolutely right."

"You don't mind if we join you, do you?"

Mark Chivers was dragging another chair towards their table.

"Yes," Daniel said quietly. "We do."

"Still determined to keep her all to yourself, Doctor Brett? Now that's not fair. Not when she's my fiancée."

"And what about the young lady with you, Mr Chivers?" Daniel enquired. "Are you going to abandon her?"

Mark's handsome face creased into a smile.

"Of course not. She's here for an exclusive interview — and now she'll get one, won't she, Elly, darling?"

Elissa sliced into her fish, and, extracting a juicy prawn, popped it into her mouth and chewed it slowly.

"Elly? Did you hear what I said?"

Elissa picked up her glass of white wine and sipped it. When she replaced it on the table again, Daniel poured in a little more.

"Elissa!" Mark's voice had an edge to it now.
