Allan Rankin, the Club Vagabond’s owner, was also at the funeral. I don’t believe he spoke to the assembly, but a letter he wrote two weeks later to a friend also stands as a eulogy:

Death is not unknown to we, John’s friends, but one cannot yet fully understand that this profusion of thought and energy will not return. His effect was far beyond his years, the culmination, the synthesis, of what he hoped to do was only beginning to emerge.

This, of course, is an irreplaceable loss for us. His mountain school that had begun reflected ideas that were only his, his other school might have emerged [the International Institute at Mont Blanc]. The ideas that were about to help us to do so much are still here, but their continuation, their expansion, are so reduced with the loss of the dynamo. In my own person the things undone, unsaid, undiscussed, and the responsibility of recall, are of dominating importance.

He will not be replaced—he was John Harlin.
