On April 13, 1840, James Alexander, who had been serving as supply pastor for the Black Presbyterians, wrote that “We dedicated our new African meeting-house.” It was not as grand as the new ionic-columned brick church for white Presbyterians on Nassau Street, but a simple wooden structure that could accommodate a good-sized congregation. On one level, the building was a gift to the Black Presbyterians, but on another it signified a guarantee that they would not come back to the main church—a hard bargain, but one they could not easily refuse. Within a few months, John Lowrey, apparently speaking “in behalf of the Coloured People,” came before the Presbyterian elders to request “a separate Communion in their own Church.” At that point, the racial separation of Princeton Presbyterian seemed to be complete.14
