So what’s the risk of not getting enough protein? Muscle wasting, fatigue, osteoporosis, hormone imbalances, skin disorders, nervous dysfunction, brittle hair, abdominal bloating and pain, and more. The most commonly known protein deficiency disorder is kwashiorkor. This form of malnutrition is caused by a lack of complete protein sources causing wasting, edema and reduced intelligence, along with marasmus (from a combination of low energy supply and protein). It is most commonly seen in developing countries where famine runs rampant, especially in children. Kwashiorkor can happen to unaware vegetarians, too. For this reason, choosing to follow a vegetarian lifestyle means much more than simply choosing not to eat meat – it means adopting a heightened awareness of what you do eat!
