PEOPLE WHO WHINGE ABOUT HAVING QUIT ARE CONSTANTLY TORMENTED BECAUSE THEY STILL BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE DEPRIVING THEMSELVES BY ‘GIVING UP’ A GENUINE PLEASURE OR CRUTCH
You now know that you’re not ‘giving up’ anything. Pleading an addictive personality is just another cop-out. You don’t want to stay trapped in your life as a gambler with all the fear, misery and hardship that goes with it – that’s why you’re reading this book. You have made the decision to escape and you’re well on the way to doing just that.
It’s easy, provided you keep an open mind. If you cling to the excuse that you have an addictive personality, it means that your mind isn’t open and you risk sentencing yourself to remain in the prison for the rest of your life.
I used to think that my addiction to smoking must be something I’d inherited from my father who was also a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer. To an observer I must have looked like I was happily going to an early grave, puffing on cigarettes all the way. In truth, I was desperate to quit. I was terrified of the threat of lung cancer and a slow, painful death. But I felt stupid and helpless because all my attempts had failed, and so putting it down to a flaw in my personality seemed to offer the only rational explanation.
I now know that I was not stupid, that the spread of misinformation is so pervasive that anybody can be conned, and most people are to some extent. But once you understand how addiction really works, the illusions disappear and you realise that you’re complete without your illusory ‘crutch’. With it, you’re a slave.
