Chapter Ten

“About 10 o'clock this morning word was received that a Mexican by the name of Pedro Ortega had been murdered, at the house of Jacob Waltz, one mile southeast of this city, by a man named Selso Grajalva. The matter was turned over to Justice Richards, who, acting as a coroner, summoned a jury and repaired to the scene of the trajedy at 1 o'clock. The GAZETTE reporter was on hand. He found the body of Ortega lying about thirty feet from the house of Jacob Waltz, his legs and abdomen (sic) from the knees to the breast bone were perferated with "double B" shot, the femeral artery on the right side being severed and in itself producing death. There is a mystery about the entire affair. Ortega was shot and killed by a shotgun belonging to Jacob Waltz. That gentleman heard the Mexicans talking loudly, and then the report of a gun. He ran to the side of the house where the trajedy occurred and saw the dying man. The assassin evidently ran around the building in an opposite direction, returned the gun to the room and place from whence it had been taken, and then sought flight...The only direct testimony was that of Waltz.” (Arizona Gazette, June 18, 1884)
