CHAPTER FOURTEEN
PORTIA ROSE RELUCTANTLY when Jonesie woke her. Her night had been full of the uneven sleep of one who fears she might be making a mistake.
âTime to go to the ship,â Jonesie said. âAre you certain you wonât accept the dukeâs kind offer?â
âOf course. I could never permit him to act on such impulsivity.â
âI think heâs genuine.â
âPerhaps now, but I donât want him to resent me later. I couldnât stand that.â
An odd look flickered over Jonesieâs face.
âWhat is it?â Portia asked.
âNothing.â Jonesie helped Portia pull her dress over her shift. âYou just strike me as caring for him.â
âPerhaps.â Portia sighed. âHeavens, Iâll have to look for governess positions when I return.â
âJust donât mention your adventure to Guernsey.â
âIâve been so foolish,â Portia said miserably.
âCome now,â Jonesie said. âLetâs get you to the ship. Itâs a nice dayâit even snowed last night.â
âSnow!â Portia smiled. âJust in time for Christmas!â Her face saddened. âThough this wonât be an enjoyable Christmas.â
Jonesie squeezed her hand, and the women exited the room. Colin and his manservant were waiting for them in the public house with food.
Colin gave her a grim smile. âI suppose you havenât changed your mind?â
She shook her head.
âThen letâs return to London,â he said.
âVery well.â Portia nodded.
They left the inn and proceeded toward the ship. It sailed toward them, but the masts and sails werenât what Portia focused on. Snow dotted the landscape. It covered the pastel houses and every road.
âItâs beautiful,â Portia breathed.
Colin smiled at her. âIndeed.â
They strode toward the harbor. Portiaâs nostrils contracted at the brisk, frigid air.
âItâs a pity we couldnât be here longer,â Jonesie remarked.
Portiaâs face stiffened, but she forced herself to smile.
âItâs good thereâs another ship,â Colin said. âPerhaps youâll have a chance to marry Mr. Andrews after all.â
âI doubt there will be time for that,â Portia said.
âYou mustnât give up hope,â Colin said with his customary confidence.
âWell, that would be preferable to her marrying her guardian,â Jonesie declared cheerfully.
Colin scrunched his forehead together. âHeâs surely not a contender?â
âHe offered to marry me so I could retain my fortune,â Portia said.
âAnd he didnât tell her about the clause in the will that would have her lose everything until it was almost too late,â Jonesie continued with the peculiar glee unique to sharing good gossip.
Colin widened his eyes.
âThe duke doesnât need to know everything,â Portia said.
Jonesieâs cheeks pinkened. âOf course, Miss.â
Portia didnât want Colin to feel sorry for her. Not after heâd offered to marry her. That had been a good and honorable thing, and the man should only feel pleasant emotions.
They neared the ship, which was now anchored. A shore boat was being lowered with passengers. No doubt, they would take the shore boat to the ship once it arrived.
Brisk air rustled the long strands of yellow and green grass, and they rolled pleasantly, as if seeking to rival the waves. Trees bent forward, and their few leaves rustled, as if delighting in the sudden athleticism. Foamy waves moved quickly up the gold pebbled beach.
âThereâs bad weather,â the man said.
