Felix needed to kiss Natasha.

When he saw her there by the bench, waiting and obviously hoping he would make a move, every instinct in his body ordered him to do it. His foot shifted automatically to step toward her. He stopped himself, immediately feeling an emotional punch to the gut from holding back.

He couldn’t. Not to her.

He’d known lots of girls, and plenty had found him attractive. As old as he was, he’d gone on many dates that had mostly fizzled out. With Natasha, it was different in every way. He craved her presence. He loved to see her laugh, cherished all the weird idiosyncrasies she had, like how her nose wrinkled up when she laughed and how her eyes lit up when she got to talk about something that made her excited. Ever since he’d met her, he’d had an undeniable urge to care for her, to laugh with her in her brightest days and protect her during her darkest nights in a way he’d never, ever felt before. Even more than that, there had hardly been a date where he hadn’t desperately wanted to make sweet, gentle love to her under the stars and to tell her how beautiful she was and how much he needed her.

But he couldn’t. Felix was a dragon, and Natasha was a human. Maybe he could after he captured the Gaia witch and lost his immortality. Until then, it was cruel to play with her, and, even more, it was dangerous. The witch knew he was here, because all the trails had vanished somehow. She was cloaking herself, so it was quite possible that she was watching him. If he cared too much for Natasha, she could fall into danger.

The other option, the option that he didn’t even want to think about, was that he would tell Natasha his feelings toward her and that the witch would somehow kill him. Wherever she was, she had immense power and the ability to slay dragons. It was a risk to chase a Gaia, and if Felix failed, Natasha would be crushed. She would think he’d played her. At least, this way, if he was killed by the witch, she’d always wonder what had happened instead of blaming herself. Another week, if that. Then he could be honest.

He was already wrong for leading her on for so long. He’d gotten caught up in this treasure hunt, and he hadn’t been able to track as much as he wanted. It truthfully sickened him to see that Natasha was growing increasingly confused. He knew how she would be thinking about this: that she’d somehow done something wrong. He’d seen that was how her mind worked: she was too caring and took everything as her own problems, which most people could never handle.

There, in the present, Natasha took his hand in hers and moved a little closer, still with a hopeful shine in her friendly, hazel eyes. Felix’s entire body stiffened as internal anguish tormented him. One week. As
