Chapter 9 - Pandora

We spend our days on the little island exploring its surprisingly vast wonders. Several times, I find myself seeking out Auberon, learning about the herbs and plants of Earth while the men train. Donovan, certain that we’ll face resistance upon completion of the ceremony, has each of us train with him for several hours a day. It becomes evident that Nero is more adept with a weapon than we had expected.

Auberon explains the cleansing ritual to me, showing me scrolls from the last time the ceremony was performed. She also reveals our special diet, which consists of fresh game, fruits, and vegetables. The catch is that we will be required to hunt, gather, and prepare all food that we eat ourselves as a team. She provides us with clothes made of natural fibers, informing me that any synthetic materials can interfere with the ceremony.

I try to focus on the tasks ahead, but unfortunately find myself distracted by the men, who look delicious in the buckskin tights that perfectly outline their rippling muscles. Every day that passes, I find it even harder to keep my hands off of their bare chests.

Either way, by the time the 72 hours start, we’re well-versed in the variety of flora and fauna on the island and find ourselves hunting and preparing meals according to Auberon’s specifications with ease.

Auberon has us bathing in a natural spring within the depths of the mountain. We cleanse our bodies with natural soaps, scrubbing with a ‘cleansing sand’ that she’s specially prepared for each of us. Despite the stress of everything that’s riding on getting everything just right, I feel more relaxed and at ease than I have in my entire life.

On the last day prior to the night of the ceremony, we’re sitting on the beach near the dock, basking in the sun. Nero and I are lying in the sand while Donovan and Kalino wrestle in the waves, dunking each other while Nero and I watch, chuckling. Sighing happily, I lean back and close my eyes, enjoying the warmth of the sun. After a moment, I feel Nero stand and join Donovan and Kalino in the water. A smile quirks my lips at the thought of the three men finally overcoming their differences. With that smile on my face, I drift off to sleep, the darkness slowly blanketing my mind as I fade out of consciousness.

Blinking my eyes open, I find myself standing in an alleyway. Frowning, I look around for the others. Finding nothing, I take a step forward and glance around suspiciously when the sound of shuffling feet draws my attention. I peek my head out of the alley and notice several shadowed figures crouching near the entrance to another alley down the street. I strain my eyes to make out their features and find myself unconsciously stepping forward.

As I’m about to step out of the alley, a large man comes jogging down the street, glancing nervously over his shoulder. At a shout from behind him, he picks up speed and sprints toward me.
