Brighton

Sitting in my office for most of the day after Ronan made me slow down had been sheer relief and stubborn torture. But he’d been right, and he knew it. My people needed to witness me continuing to be a ruler while I was hunting Camden.

The council had backed off on their hunts, and most of the people in town went about their day as if nothing had happened. I had been frustrated, suspecting all of them to be working with Camden in secret. Why else wouldn’t they seem worried that a shifter who had altered the trajectory of the entire town was on the loose?

Did my clan like how things were going? They might not be worried that you’ll vanquish Camden. They may be satisfied with the progress you’re making and would rather live their regular lives. They might—and listen up, Brighton—they might be satisfied with how you’re doing things.

Ronan’s answer to my previous questions rang through my head. Especially his question to me. Have you talked to them? Not just relied on the council’s interpretation of how the town feels. Have you talked to the people? Really talked?

I hadn’t. I’d been raised so isolated after my parents died, so defensive, that I hadn’t made many friends.

I didn’t need friends. I needed to have conversations.

I faced the door to my office. It was almost one in the afternoon. Ronan was working on the library. I had done an early morning search for more signs of Camden before coming into work.

The lunch crowd would be thinning at the diner. If I was going to talk to my people, this would be a good time to do it.

Gathering all my resolve and holding it close to my chest, I walked out of city hall and across the street to the diner. The savory smells of fried food surrounded me. My stomach rumbled, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten since I left the house.

Ronan had been making breakfast each morning before he left for the library. And each night, he gave me different experiences—new positions, multiple orgasms, drawing out one single orgasm until I was a quivering mess.

He made it hard to hunt at night or in the early morning.

An older male shifter sat alone in the booth in the corner. I spotted him chatting with Selma often. She had been good friends with his mate before the female had passed away last year. Boris had always been kind, but as he got older, he censored his speech less. I gambled today he’d do the same thing.

“Hey, Boris.”

His bushy brows drew together like he was irritated about the intrusion, and then they lifted in surprise when he saw it was me. “Brighton. What brings you by?”

I smiled and flattened my hands on my legs to keep from fiddling with my fingernails. “I’ve been told all work and no play is making me dull.” Since it was the truth, I hoped Boris wouldn’t sense any different.

“You always were a serious girl.” He took a long sip from his coffee mug.
