Unlikely Allies

“Come. To my quarters. And back to work with the rest of yer!”

The pirate crew scuttled back to their stations at the command of their captain, some chancing a glance back at Sirona and Carey as they turned. The two women followed Captain Vordeaux as they climbed the stairs up to his quarters, the pirate striding confidently along the deck. Carey glanced sideways at Sirona, observing her now blushed cheeks, life having returned completely to her skin. Blood and sea water still mingled upon her cheek, but the gash that had been there was gone; not a blemish remained upon her youthful face. So, it was true, then — Sirona was indeed touched by the immortal. The sight made Carey’s stomach turn unpleasantly — what would it be like to die, only to be brought back again and again. She winced at her own pain, and almost wished for the smallest bit of that ability. With every part of her body aching, cut and bruised, she lamented not being able to use her own magic. She was nowhere near as skilled as Rupert when it came to healing, but she’d learnt the basics.

Boldly dyed silks hung from the ceiling, covering the dark beams overhead, and colour was thrown about the room by the jewel-bright glass of hanging lanterns, dancing over every surface as the ship swayed upon the sea. Ornate pieces of jewellery were hung in display about the room, and a great painted vase stood by the stained-glass window at the far end. The furniture within was as elaborately carved as the door, heavy wooden pieces with dark velvet cushioning and gold gilding. Sirona and Carey were led to a wide lounge chair propped against the wall, and they sat amongst the piled cushions that lined it. Carey winced as she sat, the bruises covering her tender, even against the silken material of the lounge. She noticed the captain was watching them with a glint of curiosity in his eye.

“How do you know pirates?” Carey whispered once they were seated.

“I’ve had many lives, Carey,” she said with a small smile, and Carey was left wondering what else Sirona had done in her exceedingly long lifetime.

“Indeed, she has,” the captain laughed, sitting opposite them in a wide armchair and crossing his legs. “I honestly never thought I’d see you again, Sirona, considering the last time I saw you; you were fighting off a fearsome water beast all on your lonesome,” he smiled, nostalgically. “Never have I ever seen such sword work, thought it was slightly marred by the fact that you were then promptly eaten by said water beast.”

Carey coughed a little in surprise, but Sirona simply raised an eyebrow and said, “They didn’t call me the Huntress of the Southern Isles for nothing, Marcus. I’m more astounded by the fact that you now have your own ship and crew. Who did
