Nox

Why had she made it so hard for me to pry her away from the other guys? That was what I was wondering as we nearly stumbled into a wall in hell—which was just great, because that was another landing I’d fumbled because my mind was elsewhere.

“Did you really want to stay at the pub?” I couldn’t help myself. I had to know.

Not to mention, Drake was badgering me to ask.

He’s like a whiny child. Ignore him.

I huffed in response to Doc. Just breathe in the sulfur fumes, pal. It was okay for him—Drake would soon be nothing but a background murmur as his beloved sulfur stench got Doc all happy.

Come to think of it, he was probably the reason I’d returned to The Lair without my clothes that one time. Fucking demon. I shook my head. Dammit, I was grumpy today. Fucking Draven and Ash, it was all their fault.

I side-eyed Rivin. And maybe a little bit of her fault for suggesting she might stay with them.

She glanced at me and shrugged. “I guess you’ll never know.”

My gaze strayed to her lips, smiling even as they teased me, and I almost gave in to the urge to draw her against me and claim that mouth as my own. But I wouldn’t. Couldn’t.

I had shit to do and business to take care of.

But as much as I told myself to resist the allure Rivin held for me, my hand caught hers and captured it, and her fingers were warm, sending heat radiating through my whole body.

“Which way should we go?” She whispered the words as I glanced around to see where we’d arrived to.

I puffed out a breath and narrowly avoided shrugging. I didn’t want it to look like I had no idea where I needed to be.

“Where the hell even are we?” Rivin breathed the words as she touched the tips of her fingers against damask wallpaper.

“Yeah,” I said. “That. Hell. That’s exactly where we are.”

“But this doesn’t look like hell. It doesn’t feel like hell.” She looked around. “It kind of feels like heav—”

I clamed my free hand over her mouth. “Don’t even say it,” I whispered urgently.

Her eyes widened, and she nodded before I removed my hand from her face—but not before she’d sneaked out the tip of her tongue to lap against my skin. Heat sizzled all the way to my cock, but I ignored it.

“It’s kind of like saying bomb in an airport or fire in a crowded shopping mall or something. Only getting hauled away here would be very bad indeed.”

She nodded again. “Yeah. Sorry. I didn’t think. But where do you think we are?” She walked to the window before turning to me. “It’s a creepy forest out there. Think it’s where we were on our last visit?”

I shrugged as I joined her. “Could be. It would make sense.”

“Yeah.” She leaned against me. “You said traveling in hell is about intention, so it makes sense we’re in kind of the same place. Maybe we’re closer this time?”

I smiled.
