Chapter Nineteen – Joron

“Great, just in time.” Luna met Joron and Cayde in the doorway as they landed in front of the police station.

“Just in time for what?” Cayde strode toward her. They had planned to talk to Luna about taking a few days off, but it seemed that wasn’t going to happen. Not yet at least.

“There’s been a disturbance and we’ve been asked to attend. Normally, I’d go alone but this might be a good time to get some hands-on experience.” She jingled the keys in her hand as she headed for the police truck.

“You do know we served with the dragon guard for years,” Cayde told her as the dragon shifters reluctantly got into the truck.

“I do. But you don’t have witches and wizards on Cairnnor, do you?” Luna’s hand hovered over the keys in the ignition as she stared at them each in turn. She was certainly trying to communicate something with that look. Joron wasn’t sure what.

“So?” Cayde obviously didn’t get it either.

“Magical incidents are the most difficult to deal with. Witches are good at using their spells to cover their tracks. And they can cast spells and... Oh, you’ll learn on the job. There’s no way I can tell you all the ways a witch or wizard can use magic to escape the law.” She turned the key and the truck rumbled into life.

Joron jolted back in his seat as she pulled out and headed away from the station. He’d much rather be flying. Hopefully, once Luna figured they’d received enough on-the-job training, he and Cayde would be free to fly to the scene of any crime.

If they made it back from their trip to the Ukdo tribe. There was a chance this might be the last crime scene they attended.

Boy, wasn’t he in a happy mood this morning?

He rubbed his hand across his forehead. He hadn’t been completely honest with Cayde and Dove this morning over breakfast. Although he hadn’t slept well, he had slept. And dreamed. New memories had come back to him. Not just fleeting fragments.

Although, he had been truthful when he’d told them he didn’t know if they were real memories or images conjured by his troubled mind.

Or his dragon’s troubled mind. For the things he recalled were not from his human perspective.

They belonged to his dragon.

“Okay. So we’re close. I suggest you hang back and don’t say anything. Let me do the talking.” She glanced sideways at them. “I don’t need either of you being turned into a frog on your first day on the job.”

Cayde waved his finger at her. “Are you telling me that a witch can really do that?”

Luna chuckled. “No. I just wanted to see your faces.”

“Funny,” Joron replied.

“Seriously, they might not be able to turn you into a frog, but they can make you believe you are one.” She pursed her lips as she slowed the truck and parked it on the side of the road. “And believe me, you do not want to experience that.
