CHAPTER 8

ZOE

Cold wind whipped past Zoe’s face, sending her dark braid streaming behind her like a banner. She adjusted the leather satchel on her knee, then tightened her grip on Atlas’s talons. They shone like obsidian and formed a cradle for her to sit on, finer than any throne.

Unlike the first flight, the breeze didn’t turn her fingers to blocks of ice. The spark glowed in her chest, radiating warmth. As the day turned to night, the new magic bonded to her soul grew hotter—leaving her almost feverish, despite her head staying clear.

Instead of being scary and strange, the fire felt good. It was as if she’d been born to burn. For the first time in her life, she was whole.

Atlas flew higher, as if he knew the cold wouldn’t bother her. Zoe didn’t look down at the sparkling city. This far up, the orange glow faded from the night sky, and the display of a lifetime emerged.

The Milky Way glowed against a velvety, midnight backdrop.

Zoe’s breath hung in the air like silver mist before it spiraled away behind her. Wide-eyed, she looked up at the stars.

She’d never seen anything so beautiful.

Her life had been spent in the city. Dreams of seeing the world’s wonders amounted to lines on a bucket list and an emaciated holiday fund.

None of that mattered anymore.

The years of flicking longingly through glossy magazines and watching documentaries faded away. Photos and videos could never capture this splendor.

Pink hues painted the glittering galaxy and weaved through speckles of light. Ribbons of color danced across the heavens.

She’d been wrong. There was still magic in the world. The sight above her couldn’t be anything else.

The whisper of wingbeats changed. The stars faded as they began to descend, and the blinding lights of New York dominated the sky again.

An oasis of darkness appeared beneath them, and Atlas dropped towards it. As they grew closer, it resolved into the familiar outline of Central Park. How strange and wonderful to see her home from this perspective.

As he prepared to land, the treetops swayed from the powerful beats of Atlas’s wings. The creaking wood tore Zoe’s attention away from the scenery. His strength blew her mind.

How could he be interested in her? Atlas was a god. His power made a drunk lecher fall to his knees. She was just a human who got way too excited about arcade games.

But the light hit him, too.

Hope fluttered in Zoe’s chest. Since they met, it felt like her soul yearned for something. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t rush into another romance, but he looked at her like…

A pang of insecurity turned the breathless excitement sour. Zoe swallowed hard, and her hand drifted down to her stomach. Or did something else appeal to him?

It wouldn’t be the first time a dragon screwed her over for a child. She knew Atlas was a better man than Lucas, but a frightened part of her heart wanted to retreat.

Atlas landed on his back legs, without jostling her. Central Park—where everything began.
