"Yes," said Zoltan. "There is another bridge further upstream."

"That's it, then," said Vesper. "Easy. Why didn't you tell me right off?"

"Yes, well, I should also tell you," said Zoltan, "that bridge is a full day's travel from here. Maybe more. But not less."

"We'd lose that much time?" Vesper said. "No, not if we can help it. What we'll have to do is find a shallow place nearby and ford it, wagons and all."

"You know such a place?" Zoltan retorted. "Tell me where it is."

To that, Vesper had no quick answer. However, at her insistence, we turned away from the bridge—while the louts hooted and crowed triumphantly over their victory—and the caravan followed along the river until we were safely out of the villagers' sight. They were satisfied at having so maliciously thwarted the Gypsies, and gave no sign of harassing us beyond their own boundaries.
