Chapter Seven

The next day dawned clear and bright. A sunbeam cut across Chandy’s bed, but it wasn’t the light waking her this Sunday morning.

Her hand smacked the bedside table several times as she groped for her cell phone. Today was her day off, but that didn’t mean anything. Eyes still trying to focus, she pressed a button and put the phone to her ear. “Hello?”

“Good morning. Don’t you sound all wide-awake and chipper?” Justin’s warm voice resonated in her ear.

“Still asleep,” she mumbled.

“It’s after ten.”

That made her sit. The bedside clock confirmed it. Ten-fifteen. “I never sleep this late!”

“Then you must have needed the shut-eye. I’m in the neighborhood. Thought I’d drop by if that’s okay. I’ll bring you breakfast and pick up my jacket.”

“Now?” Chandy squeaked. The mirror over her dresser told her what a bad idea that was. Her hair stood straight up. She needed a shower. She put a hand over her mouth and grimaced. Bad morning breath. She was far from presentable.

“Well, since you aren’t up, how about an hour from now? Instead of breakfast, I’ll take you to lunch.”

An hour was much more reasonable. Her stomach growled its acceptance. “Is Ben with you?”

“Nope. Andy went home and Ben went to Six Flags with his friend Jake. The park won’t close until six. Since I’ve got the day free, I risked it and called. I will understand if you can’t see me.”

“No, an hour’s great.”

“Sure that’s enough time?”

“Yes.” Unlike a roommate she’d had in college who’d needed at least a full hour before she could go anywhere, Chandy could be showered and ready to leave in under twenty minutes. An hour would give her time to spare.

“I’ll see you soon then,” Justin said.

“Sounds good.” Chandy disconnected and, twenty-five minutes later, walked into her kitchen. She’d showered and dressed, choosing a lightweight red sweater and a pair of chino walking shorts. She fed the cat, poured herself a glass of orange juice and checked her e-mail. Her phone rang as she was reading one of those “Twenty things you didn’t know about me” notes on Facebook. “Hey, are you running late?” she asked, not checking the number.

“Not that I know of,” her brother Chase said.

“Oh. Hey.” Oops.

“Expecting someone else I take it,” Chase said. “Is it a guy?”

“Yeah. We’re going to lunch.”

“And since you’re not telling me his name, let me guess. Justin.”

“So what if it is? It’s just lunch. Anyway, what’s going on?”

“I need to know if you’re planning on coming up to the lake for Leroy’s birthday party. Miranda and I want to do something special since he’s turning eighty-five. But we aren’t planning anything as elaborate as his eightieth birthday party.”

“Hard to believe you two met five years ago and first got to know each other at that party,” Chandy mused.

“Yep. It’s an anniversary of sorts for us, too.” Chase was reflective for a moment and then got back to business. “So we can count on you to be there?”

“Of course. I’ve only missed
