Much, much later, I woke to the sounds of voices carrying up from downstairs. I felt around in the darkness, expecting—hoping—to find Rafael’s cool body next to mine, but did not. I wanted to ignore the disappointment that bloomed in my chest given that we’d made no promises to each other, and despite our words in the heat of passion, I had no idea where we stood. Our attraction to each other given our past was undeniable, and it would have been absurd for me to pretend to misunderstand his feelings for me, but that didn’t change my trepidation or our circumstances. It felt absurd to even consider entertaining the idea of a future when everything seemed so uncertain.

The voices downstairs grew louder, prompting me to kick the covers off and dress quickly. I wasn’t sure what the commotion was, but given the tone of the voices, I suspected it was serious. I pinned my hair up beneath a lace cap and made for the door, only to step hard into a solid wall of man and stumble backward.

“Easy, Goddess,” Rafael said, pulling me upright. “That’s twice that you’ve run into me. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s not some ruse to capture my attention.”

I bristled at his charm, still put out by waking up alone after…whatever it was that we shared.

“Well, it’s not my fault you lurk outside the door of every space I occupy,” I said snidely. “Perhaps it’s your attempt to have an excuse to lay your hands on me and save me from a tumble.”

His lips were at my ear in an instant. “Believe me, Mina, I don’t need an excuse to lay my hands on you. Simply permission.” With those devastating words, he pressed a soft kiss to my neck and held out his arm for me. “Shall we?”

I cleared my throat and willed the blush from my cheeks, hesitating before grudgingly taking his arm. We made our way down the stairs together, heading toward the collection of voices rising from Charlotte’s formal dining room. The massive doors were slightly ajar, but I knocked in case the rather loud conversation was something Rafael and I weren’t meant to hear. Charlotte poked her head through the gap in the door and grinned knowingly.

“Well! I certainly wondered if we’d see either of you this evening. I hope you got some rest,” she teased, emphasizing rest as if she knew we’d done anything but.

Rafael’s stoic face betrayed nothing, but I saw the flash of heat in his eyes.

“What’s going on in there, Charlotte?” I asked. “It sounds like you’ve got an entire army of excited women in there.”

“I do!” she grinned. “Won’t you join us? Daphne and I are convening les DD to discuss what we know and plan what to do about the Order.”

“And Laszlo?” Rafael asked quietly.

Charlotte nodded, her lips drawn in a tight line. She pulled the door open and waved us in.

I’d seen Charlotte’s dining room decked out for countless dinner parties, holidays, and balls, and it was always impressive.
