Chapter 16
Juan
Mecca’s whinin’ and cryin’ hadn’t stopped; not even once since we’d left my father’s house. We argued for ten minutes straight, only taking a break when I stopped at my storage unit to scoop the $250 grand my father had given me. I needed it to meet up with Julio. It was the first time in hours that I felt a sense of relief. The chaos between Slice’s threats, Maria’s deceit, and Mecca threatening to leave me had become too much. Besides, I was still in pain.
I hopped back into the Porsche only to have a gun aimed at my head. “Oh, shit,” was all I could mumble. My breathin’ escalated. I kept trying to think of words to say that would make her put the gun down. Mecca had been so emotional for the last two days I knew she was at her breakin’ point.
“Mecca, c’mon babe. Put the gun down. I know you’re upset, but I love you, girl. I thought we got all this straight.”
“Shut the fuck up!” she shouted with snot drippin’ from her nose. “How can we straighten out all those fuckin’ lies you’ve been feeding me?”
Her face had turned an even brighter red since I’d gotten out the car. And her eyes that had once looked at me lovingly, now looked at me with spite.
Hate.
Pure hate.
Who would’ve ever thought my girl, my woman, my lady, would be holdin’ a gun to my temple? I thought about asking for forgiveness, and telling her it would never happen again, but knew it wouldn’t do any good. I’d been apologizin’ nearly an hour for fuckin’ Peaches the night she lost the baby. She felt like if my father hadn’t dry snitched, I wouldn’t have ever confessed. She was right.
“You son of a bitch! I hate you, Juan! She shouted as the gun shook between the palms of her hands. As the tears flowed she kept tellin’ me how much she hated me. “You ruined my life and all I ever did was try to love you! You fucked Peaches’, Cheri, and God knows who else….all while I was sufferin’ inside. I lost my damn baby, Juan!”
“Nooooo, Mecca, it wasn’t like that,” I pleaded, with my hands now on the steering wheel. From my peripheral vision, I had a close up on her brittle nails. I kept trying to steal a glimpse of her eyes. I wanted to speak to her through them. I wanted her to know that I really did love her. “Mecca, you know you don’t want to kill me, baby. You’re not a killer. So just put the gun down.”
“You don’t know what I’m capable of, Juan. You really don’t know!”
She hauled off and spit in my face, dropping the gun simultaneously. I thought about beatin’ the shit out of her. But she was balled over in the seat crying, and holdin’ her stomach like she was having a nervous breakdown. Sadly, it was one of those moments I remembered about my mother.
My cell phone rang interruptin’ everythin’.
