The captain had just gotten off a call with the mayor when Alyssa reached him, so to call him a little cranky didn’t even come close, but since that was his general resting demeanor as well, Alyssa didn’t let it faze her.

‘Did you find out who gave Cannon that information?’ As usual, Hammond’s greeting consisted of a barked order or question.

‘Not yet.’

‘I’ve already got a squad car heading over to the Sandersons’ right now, so if that’s why you’re calling, it’s done. And since I’ve got you on the phone, I’ll tell you what I dropped by to tell you before Ruby… came in.’ Neither Alyssa nor Cord could hold back their grins at the way the captain hesitated. ‘I was delivering a message from Hedge.’

Bill Hedge was one of the department’s top technicians. ‘Good news, I hope?’

‘Yes and no. That print on the blinds outside the victim’s bedroom was pretty smeared, but he thinks he may have been able to obtain at least a partial print. He was going to run it through the system and get back to you as soon as he had an answer. Tread from shoe drag prints on the carpet appear to have come from a woman’s size seven or eight Fila sneaker.’

It wasn’t what Alyssa wanted to hear, but at least it was something, so she’d take it. After giving him an update on where they were headed, she ended the call. ‘You know, I’m fairly certain that’s the greatest number of words that man has ever strung together in one sitting since I’ve met him.’

Because they were still waiting for Hal to contact her with Ewan Moore’s current location, and they were already nearby, Alyssa drove to Lillian Holt’s place. Yellow crime scene tape still surrounded Skye Fleming’s property, though half of it was blowing in the brisk spring wind. Before they’d even climbed out of the vehicle, Lillian Holt appeared on the porch, the lines around her mouth tightening as her eyes shifted toward her neighbor’s house before she averted her gaze to watch Alyssa and Cord’s approach.
