CHAPTER

TEN

JASON

He’d completely played me, and I fell for it, hook, line and sinker. What I wasn’t prepared for was to be knocked flat by the biggest dog I’d ever seen.

“Smokey,” Mal shouted, and the dog moved off to the side and sat. Mal held out his hand and helped me up. “I’m so sorry about that.”

“You,” I said, barely able to finish my sentence. For one, I’d had the breath knocked out of me, and second, I was still trying to get over the fact that this was Mal’s house. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I thought it would be funny. I’m…not very good at it, sorry.” The poor guy looked distraught.

“You had me going for a minute. I really thought you were going to knock!” Finally getting my breath back, I gazed around the impressive hallway. Black-and-white tiles covered the floor; there were antiques galore: tables, chairs, some beautiful rugs, and don’t even get me started on the vases placed precariously within the dog’s reach.

I looked towards the impressive wooden staircase, a glass chandelier hanging down, lighting up the foyer. I’d never seen a house this big. Except it wasn’t a house, it was a mansion. An honest-to-God stately home.

“Do you live here alone?” Surely it was far too big for one person.

“Zeke lives here too, but it doesn’t look as if he’s home right now. His car isn’t on the drive. I’ve told him how many times to put Smokey in the lobby out back.” He took hold of Smokey by the collar and led him through the house into the kitchen.

That, too, was enormous with every appliance you could ever want. It put my tiny two-bedroom house to shame.

“Wow. This is some kitchen.” It was all black and white, not at all like the antique-laden entrance hall. I turned in a circle, taking it all in.

“I’ll just let him out. No idea how long he’s been stuck inside.”

Mal flicked a switch, and huge lights illuminated the rear of the house. An enormous paved area that led to acres of green.

Smokey ran outside and peed up the nearest flower pot. Poor dog must have been desperate.

“What do you do with all the land? What do you need it for?”

I was astounded that two men would need so much.

Mal shrugged. “We like privacy. We’ve, erm, collected a fair amount of money over the years. Made sense to us to put it to good use.”

“How long have you lived here?” I couldn’t remember seeing it up for sale, and I’d lived here all my life, if you didn’t count the years I’d spent living away at university.

Mal waved his hands around. “A while, give or take a few years.”

“Just how many years?” I was intrigued. How long did demons live? How long had Mal been alive?

“I mean, if you want specifics, probably around seventy-five.”

“Seventy-five years?” I could hardly keep the disbelief out of my voice. “That’s a hell of a long time.”

“Tell me about it.” He laughed. “Seventy-five years living with Zeke.
