Chapter 17

Gavin slipped Cole an envelope just as they stepped out of the car in front of the 10th Avenue orphanage/church/school. “This is for expenses only.” He cast a disparaging look at the ramshackle building leaning over them. “Make donations on your own dime. Take my card. Call me once you find Miss Christina.”

“Sure,” Cole grunted. “Whatever you say. Hey, Corrina. Time to wake up.” Exhaustion combined with Blue Calc and a full belly had the girl snoring. She was a rag doll as he pulled her out and set her on unsteady feet.

She was still half asleep and didn’t recognize the building. “Where are we?” The storm had blown itself out and the night was one of those rare cloudless ones. She tilted her head way back and gazed up at three stars set in a black sky. Compared to the fake sky in the underground vamp world, it was depressing.

“We’re getting a place to stay,” Cole said and pulled her back from the shiny black car, which was slowly easing away from the curb.

It slowed and the back window rolled down. Gavin stuck his thin head from it. “I’ll be keeping an eye on you, Mr. Younger.”

When it was gone, Cole muttered, “That wasn’t creepy at all. Come on Corrina.” She leaned into him as he mounted the stairs and knocked on the door. It was well after eleven by then and the orphanage was dead quiet. It took four of his hammer-like blows before a sleepy-eyed boy answered.

“Get me Father James,” Cole demanded and then caught hold of the back of Corrina’s red coat just as she tried to run. “It’s just until I figure out what to do with you.” This was a lie. He fully intended to drop her off with a large cash donation and never come back. It was all the charity he could manage under the circumstances.

Father James took five long minutes to come down and when he did, he was dressed in his working garments: plain black shirt and pants, a white collar tight around his throat. He was shaking his head as he approached, “I can’t, Cole.”

“You can. I can pay for her living expenses, plus a little bit on top.”

“Yes, I can see by your suit, and I would if I could, but the police have been here asking about you. A Sergeant Hamilton seemed very intent on finding you and the girl. He said he’d be back.”

Cole was struck dumb by this. He could understand Hamilton coming after him, but why on earth would he want Corrina? How would he even know about her? “That doesn’t make any sense. Hamilton’s never even seen her. How would he…” James’ eyes darted away and Cole knew. “You told him!”

“Yes. He threatened us. You know this place isn’t exactly legal.” Not only was the school portion of the church illegal, none of the children were technically registered. They didn’t have work licenses and didn’t pay the yearly head-tax. It was a
