Found Out

My heart pounded so hard I was sure Mrs. Draven would hear it. I strode down the corridor as fast as I could, forcing myself not to break into a full-on run. I didn’t want her to know I was there. I had to warn the others before she got back. We had to get out, fast.

A door creaked behind me. I slowed and took a deep breath as I glanced back.

“Did you find what you were looking for?” Mrs. Draven asked, her smile empty. Her eyes were dimmer than ever as they gazed at me. She looked like a strange, glassy eyed doll.

“I… I was just looking for the bathroom.” I hadn’t needed it before but it was starting to feel like I would soon.

“It doesn’t appear you found it. You look uncomfortable. Don’t be, everything’s fine. Actually, it’s better than fine. Come with me, I’ll show you where it is.”

“I… I don’t need it now. Thanks anyway. We’ve got to get going.”

“No.” Her smile was plastic and fake. “Oh, no! You can’t go yet.” She stepped toward me. I stood my ground, unwilling to turn my back on her.

“Why?” I asked, trying to keep my tone light, like there was no problem.

“Because we haven’t found your kitty cat yet, have we?” She slipped a hand into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a sleek silver phone. “Let me call the neighbors. You and your friends can wait and sample my delicious carrot juice.”

I didn’t want any of her delicious carrot juice. I wanted to grab the others and get out of there. But fear held me rooted to the spot. It took everything I had to force myself to back away down the corridor.

“You and your friends can wait and sample my delicious carrot juice,” she said again, like a broken robot. “You and your friends can wait and sample my delicious carrot juice.” She strode faster toward me.

I sprinted down the hall. My legs felt like they were made of jelly as I stumbled into the kitchen.

The others glanced at me, looking worried. I shook my head slightly, and opened my eyes wide to warn them. “What’s that?” I asked loudly, “oh you found her? Great!”

“Found who?” Zach asked as Mrs. Draven appeared behind me.

“The cat,” Jacob said quickly, “yes, we found Cattywhumpus.” He nodded to me and I nodded back.

“Cool,” I said, almost shouting, “well we should probably head home then.” I tried not to flinch as Mrs. Draven stepped into the kitchen, her eyes staring emptily. She strode past me and stood in front of the patio doors. “You can’t leave,” she said. “Not yet.”

“We’ve got to,” I said. I reached for the doors but she blocked me. I tried to go the other way, but she leaped in front of me like we were playing some kind of silly game.

Mrs. Draven held her phone up, and I heard the snapping sound effect of a shutter as she photographed us. “You and your friends can wait and sample my delicious carrot juice.
