CHAPTER TWELVE

With her bags packed and sitting by the door, Jasmine sat in the family room watching CNN Business Report as she waited on the limousine to pick her up for her vacation with Maxwell. The trip was much needed and definitely overdue. Jasmine was so happy inside that she was going away with Maxwell. Over the past year, she had discovered a lot about herself and what she needed in her life to achieve the type of happiness she felt she deserved. One of those things happened to be her relationship with Maxwell and the love he poured on her. He had been a godsend to her heart and she fell head over heels for him. Though she initially thought it would end in heartbreak due to Maxwell’s sordid past of love ’em and leave ’em, she discovered that he just wanted someone to love him with maturity and not as some savior because of his societal status. But over that timeframe, she saw that Maxwell loved her in ways that she could have never imagined. They were inseparable. With some issues still unclear like whether or not he was Jaymee’s daughter’s biological father, they had decided to face them head on and together.

Coming down the long corridor with her eyes burning a hole into the luggage was Gloria. She hated that Jasmine was leaving during the critical time of them trying to take back the company from Jaymee. Most of all she hated that Jasmine was going away with Maxwell. Deep down it wasn’t that she hated Maxwell for something he had done, but more for what she expected him to do, and that was to eventually break Jasmine’s heart. Gloria was always protective of her kids, but with the recent murder of Ricky she only got worse. For Jasmine’s vacation, Gloria had hired a private security detective to follow and guard her without her knowing. There was no way Gloria was going to lose another child under any circumstance.

Jasmine noticed her mother approaching the doorway. She smiled. Jasmine knew that her mother hated the fact that she was going away for almost a month. She hoped that Gloria would be happy for her, but by the depressed look on Gloria’s face she knew different.

“Hey momma,” Jasmine said with a glow about herself. As they made face to face contact Jasmine caught her mother rolling her eyes. “What’s wrong?”

Gloria tried to straighten up and act innocent. “Nothing. Why do you ask?”

“Rolling your eyes.”

“No, I didn’t.”

Jasmine smirked. “Really. Momma, I know you’re not happy with me going to Africa with Maxwell.”

“You go and enjoy yourself in the jungle.” Gloria turned her lip up at her playfully as she went and sat down across from her.

“There you go,” Jasmine said, staring at her mother. She knew her mother only wanted the best for her and that was what made it hard, because Gloria’s version of what was best did not include Maxwell.

“I’m just saying, you could have just gone to the New York Zoo if you wanted to see lions and zebras,” Gloria said with chuckle.
