Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

The beloved animated film Mask of the Phantasm is popular for many reasons, one being the territory the film explores that is not seen in the animated series. The series does not spend a lot of time on Bruce Wayne as a young adult just prior to becoming Batman. The creators used the animated film as an opportunity to explore this time in his life. We find a young Bruce struggling to put his plan to rid Gotham of crime into action. We don’t know how long Bruce has been back home from his travels but it’s clear that Batman hasn’t come into his mind yet. He often visits his parents’ graves and meditates on the plan.

This is where he meets Andrea Beaumont, whom Bruce forms a relationship with. He catches Andrea talking aloud to her own mother’s grave and at first he doesn’t realize to whom she is speaking. They begin discussing their respective parents and Andrea asks Bruce what he says to them. He replies that he made a secret vow and declines to get into it further. That secret vow though, of course, is to save Gotham from the evil that took his parents’ lives and Bruce soon realizes how difficult it is to keep.

His first night of crime fighting does not go well. Bruce goes out into the streets wearing only a ski mask and a leather jacket; his only weapons are a few throwing stars and spiked ball bearings. His first heroic act is stopping a warehouse theft. Naturally, the thieves only mock him and while Bruce does take most of them down, he endangers the life of a security guard and allows one of the crooks to get away. Bruce chases as the straggler tries to get away in a tractor trailer. The police follow and it ends in a huge crash. Bruce is fortunate to escape with his life and is also lucky that no one was killed due to his recklessness. Still, he is encouraged but also realizes his biggest problem – they weren’t afraid of him.

Bruce’s frustrations only grow as his attraction to Andrea grows as well. The more serious their relationship gets, the more unrealistic the plan seems to him. Bruce feels he can’t risk his life every night with Andrea waiting for him to come home. But Bruce made a vow and he is greatly conflicted. He finds himself pleading with the specter of his parents at their tombstone, imploring them to release him from his promise. He says that he can give money to the police instead and help in other ways. Andrea arrives, saying maybe his parents sent her as a sign; they embrace each other. Unfortunately, Andrea later mysteriously ends their engagement just a day after Bruce proposes. He then has no reason not to keep his vow to his parents and thus Batman is born.
