BRAYTHE

I slip back into my clothes in a matter of seconds. Being back in the fresh and open air of Protheka only makes the smell of my garments more apparent, reminding me that I’m in need of a change as soon as possible.

At least Lucy doesn’t mind…

I keep an eye out for prying eyes from strangers as she gets dressed. Once she’s ready, she rejoins me by my side, linking arms.

“Are you ready to go?” I ask her.

“Anywhere with you,” she replies with a smile.

Fuck, I’ve missed this so much.

We leave our spot and begin the journey back to her home. I let out a sigh of contentment. Although my body still feels the effects of being kept prisoner in a cage for a year, making love with Lucy seems to have brought with it a healing energy, rejuvenating me with a clear mind.

I’m already imagining the feeling of getting into a hot bath with Lucy and a glass of wine, spending the night catching up and sleeping together in the same bed.

There’s just so much I have to experience again! I think in excitement.

“Tell me about your return journey,” says Lucy, tugging on my arm.

“Oh gods, where do I even start?” I mutter.

As I think of what to say, there speaks a voice inside my head, remdiming me that there still exists a wall of lies I put up between Lucy and myself. I question if I should come clean to her now for a moment, but ultimately decide to hold back for the time being. I have just returned, and needed time to settle back in before doing anything drastic.

“Well, I’. sure you remember how bad the weather got around the time when I initially left.”

“I do,” replies Lucy. “Storms here, there, and everywhere.”

“My ship caught its fair share of those, but that was the least of our problems.”

We come back out onto the main streets of Vhoig’s city center.

“My unit and I actually completed our mission tasks sooner than expected, so we were on track to get home earlier, but the storms had different ideas. I knew then it would be a little while before the ship docked back at Vhoig’s harbors.”

In the distance, I spot the harbors, looking toward them in reflection of what I went through.

“After fighting the orcs, my unit and I thought that was it, that we’d be safe from harm. Unfortunately, minotaur pirates had other plans.”

“Pirates… I had a feeling,” remarks Lucy. “I overheard some people talking about a lot of raids being carried out on the seas, and that a ship on its way back to Vhoig never made it home.”

“That was likely mine then,” I reply.

“They must have been skilled if they took over a military ship.”

“Simply put, we were outnumbered and unprepared,” I tell her. “Maybe things would have been different had we known of the pirate problem.”

“How did you get out though?”

“I spent a few months studying their routes and concocting an escape plan to strike them at their most vulnerable.
