Chapter 1

Denise Walker

“I'm just stepping out for a short walk. I should be back in a while,” Denise Walker said as she walked out of the shack, slamming the door behind her.

“Make sure that you get back before it gets dark,” Shantel shouted after her. “You know what they say about vampires and other scary tales in this place.”

“Blah, blah, blah, I wonder how you guys believe such tales,” she dismissed her friends as she looked around wondering where to go.

She and her college friends had taken a trip to Fort Graymoore, located deep in the woods and right by the ocean. This was part of a study that they were doing as a part of their final year thesis that touched on the history of Fort Graymoore. The history of the fort was surrounded by a lot of mysteries, many of which revolved paranormal activities that were said to involve vampires. Denise found herself walking toward the direction of the deserted fort, a chill going through her as she saw how lonely and isolated it was. The local Indians, who had lived in the area, have spotted and been attacked by vampires many years ago. It was said that the vampires would come out after dark and they usually attacked people near a creek that was on the way to the fort.

Denise wondered what the world would be like if vampires actually existed. Aside from the fact that they were blood sucking beings, they were probably beings just like humans who were trying to make their lives worthwhile. She pulled her jacket tightly around her as she approached the fort; the cold afternoon wind blowing through her hair. That was yet another thing that amazed her about this place. Fort Graymoore was located near the beach and one would expect the weather here to be hot, but instead the weather got pretty chilly in the late afternoons.

“Denise, mind if I join you?” Shantel shouted, frightening her to the point where she felt as if she had jumped out of her skin.

“Shantel, you really frightened me,” she said as she turned around, her face as white as a sheet.

“Ah, and I thought that you're the one who isn’t afraid of anything,” Shantel laughed. “Anyway, I got bored hanging out in the shack with the guys and thought I would join you. Where are you heading to?”

“I am human and can get frightened,” Denise realized that she was actually happy for the company. “I'm not really sure where I’m going. I just wanted to get some fresh air as I look around. Maybe I could get a head start on my thesis and get out of here sooner.”

“Well, it looks like you're headed toward the fort and so we might as well check it out before darkness falls. I carried a flashlight for emergency,” Shantel said, catching up with Denise's pace.

“I guess you're right, it won't hurt at all,” Denise said, feeling like she now had more confidence to face the fort than she had before.
