Germany was the epicenter for two distinct Expressionist groups: Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter. The artists of Die Brücke (1905–1913, Dresden) held up a critical mirror to what they saw as the misplaced values of society. Their paintings and prints convey feelings of tension, loss, and isolation engendered by the forthcoming war. Images with lacerating jagged lines, bold colors, and distorted, zombie-like figures occupy a claustrophobic space. Die Brücke engaged the problems of the urban environment by turning their backs on nature and imposing their angst onto representational imagery.
