As P.E. came to an end, Coach Tremwall called the students back into the gym. Everyone filed in as usual. Maria, Sara, Robert, Josh, and David were last, considering how slow they moved in their weakened, demoralized states.

Josh didn't even look back as he held the door for David.

Stumbling in, David noticed that none of the Bully Club members were in the line that was forming at the front of the gym.

A hand grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him back out the door, onto the blacktop. He tried to call out, but a hand slipped over his mouth. The hand was thick and all-too-familiar from the day when Tate had held him against the wall.

The gym door slammed shut, and David struggled to move Tate's hand from his mouth.

What was Tate thinking? Was this about dodgeball or that stupid Sara thing? Why did they have to be so over-dramatic?

David's struggle wasn't doing him much good, so he surrendered. Whatever punishment the Bully Club had for him couldn’t be all that bad.

Tate dragged him around the corner into an alley beside the gym.

Opposite of the school's brick wall, a wire fence sealed off a dangerously steep hill that dipped to a retention pond.

Jonathan, Larry, and Mimi stood in the alley, their arms folded. They stared at David through black pupils.

Tate pushed David down so that he landed on his knees in front of Jonathan. Mud clung to his jeans.

Man, he thought. All my pants are gonna be ruined!

Jonathan stared down at him with dark, menacing eyes. David had never seen Jonathan like this. It gave him the chills, but he wasn't going to give Jonathan the satisfaction of knowing that.

“If it isn’t the King of the Daffadors,” Jonathan said. He growled like a dog, grabbed David by his shirt collar, pulled him to his feet, and shoved him against the brick wall so that they were eye to eye. Those dark eyes looked into David’s with a fierce intensity, and David knew he wasn’t dealing with Jonathan anymore.

“You’re so good at dodgeball,” Jonathan said, “that we thought we’d show you a new game.” He whipped around and threw David against the fence with an intensity that knocked the wind out of him.
