Lair
The morning sun peeked through the canopy of palms and warmed the walls of the small stone building. The surrounds looked refreshed from a night without the heat and a small group of statues began their daily routine.
Inside the building JJ was the first to stir. His eyes struggled to open as his body began to awaken. On a small stone block nearby sat a basket with a mix of fruit, nuts, berries and some stones.
âBreakfast.â he thought, causing his stomach to rumble and his mouth to water.
Next up was Rani. Linc was still in a deep dreamland.
âHeâs probably dreaming of food, no doubt.â she said, in a sleepy voice mixed with a lazy yawn.
âLooks like they worked out what we like to eat. Except for the stones anyway.â said JJ.
As they filled their empty stomachs ready for the day ahead, Linc finally moaned and awoke to enter the new day.
âThought youâd smell the food.â laughed Rani.
After Linc grabbed his share and practically inhaled it, the three emerged from their shelter into the sunshine and fresh air. Donkor was sitting over in the clearing with a small group of statues, and they welcomed the three warmly as they approached.
âWe trust you had a nice comfortable sleep my friends. We hope that you found the food to your liking. Please have some water.â said Donkor, as he passed a small wooden jug of fresh water to Rani.
âYes, thanks. I havenât slept that well for ages.â said JJ.
âLoved the food. Just what I needed.â Linc said, as he wiped some fragments of fruit from the edge of his mouth.
âSo. Do you have a plan? We are ready to help you in any way that you need.â Donkor said.
âWell . . . the plan is to continue along the riverbed until we find another island. Itâs where we think we can find Sobekâs lair.â JJ replied.
âIf you have no objection, we would like to send some help with you. Just in case you meet any perils.â Donkor offered.
âThat would be really appreciated. We need all the help we can get.â
âDone. Ata and Atsu will accompany you to your destination. Although they donât always agree with each other, they are loyal and they have keen senses that may prove very useful. The island you seek is not too far away, you should be there before the sun is high in the sky.â
With their stomachs full and their new guides ready, the group were ready for the next phase of their quest. The overnight comforts had refreshed them and rejuvenated their energy. They bid farewell and thanked Donkor and his friends for the kindness that they had shown them. The statues were unanimous in their feeling that it was a âthank youâ for freeing them from a life of stillness more than anything else. They had great respect and admiration for the three that had made such a wonderful impact on their lives.
Ata and Atsu battled between themselves to be the one who led the group into the undergrowth.
