CHAPTER TEN

Kathryn had spent the last week getting the apartment ready for Jennifer’s visit. There was food in the refrigerator, clean sheets on the bed and a bundle of nerves enough to fill the room. All she thought about for the last two weeks was if she would still feel that pinch in her heart when she was in Jennifer’s presence. Kathryn didn’t even know if she would recognize her.

Now standing in the airport waiting near the carousel where the luggage from the flight would arrive, Kathryn waited nervously. She shifted from foot to foot watching the escalator. As her eyes rose, she saw her. Jennifer was wearing a pair of dress slacks, light blouse and a three quarter length coat. Her dark hair was shorter now and her face had matured in the last four years, but what Kathryn noticed was how beautiful she was. She watched as Jennifer’s eyes searched for her in the crowd. Kathryn stepped away from the wall and Jennifer saw her. Her eyes lit up and a wide smile appeared on her face. As she got closer, Kathryn opened her arms to her.

“Kate,” she whispered before stepping into Kathryn’s arms.

“Hello, Jen. You look even more beautiful then I remember.”

Jennifer looked at Kathryn’s face again and then pulled her in for another hug. “You’ve changed your hair.” She touched the ends. “It’s longer than the last time I saw you.” Jennifer also noticed her body. It was still feminine, but as she hugged her, she felt the muscles underneath her clothes. Kathryn was wearing a pair of tight jeans and a light sweater. Over the sweater was a leather jacket which made her look so handsome.

Jennifer finally released Kathryn, but her eyes remained on her as if she were trying to memorize everything about her. “Let’s get your luggage so we can get out of here.”

Jennifer pointed out her luggage and Kathryn lifted it easily off the carousel. She put her arm through Kathryn’s as they stepped outside. Kathryn’s hand came up in a wave to signal for a cab.

“Kate, you didn’t have to come get me. I could have taken a cab on my own,” she said smiling.

Kathryn wondered if she should tell her she couldn’t wait to see her and sitting around the apartment waiting would have been too much to bear. “It was no trouble, Jen.”

Jennifer looked at the sights as the cab took them to Kathryn’s apartment. Once inside, Kathryn took her suitcase to the bedroom. Jennifer followed behind.

“I think you’ll be comfortable here.” She walked toward the hallway. “The bathroom is here. There’s fresh towels in the cabinet.” Kathryn pointed.

Jennifer was about to argue about not taking Kathryn’s bed, but she didn’t want to start an argument already. “Thank you, Kate,” she said instead.

“Are you hungry?” Kathryn asked wanting to kiss the woman standing before her, but not wanting to seem too anxious.

“Can we sit for a moment and talk?” Kathryn nodded and turned. Before they could leave the hallway, Jennifer reached for Kathryn’s wrist and turned her around.
