Don’t be satisfied with the options given to you.

You can create your own solutions, your own world. The world tries to make you choose between Pepsi and Coke, Republican and Democrat. This is a false choice, take life into your own hands.

Ch. 5 | ATLAS

Be the change you want to see in the world.

While on vacation with friends, I sat alongside a beautiful stream just outside Glacier National Park when the rain rolled in. A group of us went inside the RV and started playing cards. After about an hour it dawned on me that we had locked ourselves inside a plastic box, with small windows completely cut off from one of the most gorgeous places in the world. I don’t make it to national parks often, and here I was hanging out inside, instead of enjoying the great outdoors.

A couple of years after that experience another group of friends and myself were camping by a lake in Colorado. While we were outside fishing, hiking, and making food by the campfire, I noticed the family slightly downhill from our campground rarely left their RV. I could hear the growl of their generator pumping electricity to their running air conditioning unit. Sometimes the screen door would creak open, only to be slammed shut moments later.

One small window punctuated the exterior on each side. Surrounding the RV was beautiful brown bark lying on the ground. The green tree canopy swayed in the breeze, and a blue hue coming off the lake in the distance blended seamlessly into the sky. Smack dab in the middle of the scene was a dirty 1990’s RV that looked like a love child conceived between “Mad Max” and your local trailer park.

I knew there had to be a better solution. Can we design a structure that is mobile, but also lets people connect with nature? Can you be inside without disconnecting from the outdoors? RV’s offer great mobility, and tiny homes (a new lifestyle movement—Google it, if you are unaware, but be ready to fall down a rabbit hole) offer exceptional craftsmanship. Can these two concepts be blended? Too often we are disconnected from the stunning places we live. The solution we devised was Atlas which seeks to reconnect us with our environment.

Tiny homes often mimic the traditional pitched roof shape of a house. They use quality wood material, which is often heavy. It makes them hard to tow and not very aerodynamic. RV’s are lightweight, and more aerodynamic, but even upscale options provide an interior aesthetic that feels fake and out of place with stunning natural landscapes. Somehow marble countertop with vinyl floors doesn’t mix well in a mobile structure set in the forest.

By combining the best quality of each industry, we designed a hybrid solution that meets the aerodynamic demands while allowing more of natural world inside. By letting the environment be our guide, we can start to mold our design.
