Once I dreamed that there was a dark-red river flowing just above my head. It was the river of untold stories. All I had to do was reach up and touch the river and the stories would pool like blood in my hands. I knew in my dream that it was a timeless river and easy to reach if you knew it was there. But that was the great secret. You had to know it existed.

I wrote it all down in the middle of the night, while a lightning storm burst so viciously overhead that it set off the fire alarms. As I wrote, I thought of the javelin that had sailed from my hand long ago at the Eagle House track meet and the angels that carried it up. I’d had the same feeling back then, that it was a strength I could use if only I knew how.
