Chapter Twelve

After the longest five days of Bea’s life, Friday rolled around. She’d managed to keep herself preoccupied with her drawings, sketching the pictures of Elijah and the mountains she’d taken the previous Friday. She’d even painted several canvases. Bea was determined to keep herself busy and productive, and not sit by the window and pine away for her mysterious mountain man.

This second maybe-date felt somehow more monumental than the first. This one was most assuredly an actual date, or so Millie, Bea, and Violet had determined on Sunday over carnitas tacos.

The fact that he used Evelyn as a segue to conversation showed that he was nervous. The fact that he came to church showed he was willing to step out of his routine. And the fact that he had even bothered to speak to any woman at all showed how serious he must be about Bea. All that on top of the fact that Ben had come into the diner to scope her out and give her his silent approval. It had taken two bowls, not cups, of queso, and four baskets of tortilla chips to arrive at this conclusion.

On Thursday, at exactly 5:02 p.m., directly after the library closed, Violet had called Millie. After a hushed and short conversation, Millie hung up the phone and came upstairs to Bea’s room.

“Make sure you wear something really nice. What was it he said? Practical? That man likes practical things, not hoity-toity. And wear your hair down.”

On Friday, a mysterious phone call to the diner at lunchtime had prompted Rhonda, ever the sucker for a good romance story, to let Bea off two hours early so she could spend extra time getting ready.

With her surplus of time, Bea got ready for her second maybe-date. She took a shower and washed her hair. After it air-dried, she straightened it with her flatiron, making sure there were no flyaway kinks or any strands acting up. She ironed her bangs until they had just the right amount of swoop across her forehead. She applied a light mist of hairspray, to make sure there would be no unaccounted-for frizzing.

Bea applied light foundation, and nude lip gloss, much like she had the first time. She didn’t like to overdo it too much, but she did decide to go with a slightly darkened eyeshadow just to make her eyes pop a little more. All week, Bea had been wearing her contacts, so tonight she opted for her glasses. The bit of eyeshadow complimented them well.

Next, she put on the same jeans she’d worn last week that had—or so she’d imagined—made Elijah have to catch his breath. She paired them with a Free People tunic top she’d found in a thrift store. It was her favorite, fanciest shirt, that she only brought out for special occasions. She put the ankle boots back on, but stuck her tennis shoes into her backpack just in case she needed them.

Before leaving, Bea did a quick spin in the mirror. Her style was practical hippie chic, and she was adorable.
