The Cost of My Salvation: Making the Stand

ime went on, and I graduated from high school with honors. I decided to go to a local junior college. I was excited about

college and about the plans I had made for life. I never expected that my parents would be unsupportive. Every day when I came home, my father told me that college would draw me away from the faith and that it would expose my mind to worldly thinking. My mother did nothing to stop him from talking that way. I believe in a wife’s ’s ’ submission to her husband, but in my opinion, my mother should have questioned some of the things that my father did. One day, I asked her why she never said anything. She answered that even though his views on some things were not always right, he was the head of the house. Her answer did not satisfy me. I ended up dropping out of college two weeks after I had enrolled. I just could not handle the pressure, but I felt like a failure. I knew I had to get out of that house, so I decided to find a job.

I worked at a local grocery store right after leaving college, then, I found a data entry job at a local home health company. The job did not pay much, but I was able to take care of my expenses. Shortly after I started that job, I decided to join a health club. Walking home from school each day kept me fit, but now that I was out of school, I really needed a way to stay in shape. I joined on a Friday, and shortly afterward, I met a church minister there who introducedmetoJesus.Ihadsomanyquestions, and to my surprise, the answers he gave me were very detailed and specific.

What amazed me about this minister was that no matter what question I had about God, he always had an answer that could be found in the Word of God. He showed me basic scripture and broke it down in a way that I could easily understand. The first thing I did was to ditch my Jehovah’s Witness Bible (New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures and get a King James Version Holy Bible. I found the King James Version (KJV) to be a truer version but the language was difficult, so I bought the New International Version (NIV) of the Holy Bible then began to understand the Bible. The more I read and prayed for understanding, the more alive the Word became to me. I still “played the game” in my parent’s ’s ’ house, but I soon got tired of not being true to myself. I wanted to be free to express my faith in God the way I chose to, and not according to the Witnesses standard. I decided it was time to move out of my parents’ house.
