2.2.5.20. Mount Beni Bou Chibet

This mountain is harsh and frozen, and no grain grows there, nor can they even keep livestock, because it is so cold and dry. Its forests, dense with tall trees, cannot be used for pasturing goats. But they have many nuts, supplying Fez and all the neighbouring towns, and black grapes with which they make a fine, thick, sweet zebibi as well as cooked must and terrible wine.184 The inhabitants all wear woollen sacks,185 like the poor blankets that Italian merchants put their fabrics in when carrying them from place to place; these sacks are trimmed in black and white, with hoods for the head, and whoever sees the locals in the woods will sooner take them for animals than men. All the mule-drivers of Fez visit the mountain in winter to bring back the nuts and black zebibi, but travellers like these will hardly ever find wheat bread or meat, for the mountainfolk are accustomed to barley bread, onions and salted sardines, which are much in favour there. They also eat a lot of cooked must with bread and bean soup, which they think is the best food imaginable.
