My first appointment was nearing for me to have a checkup so that I could see an official sonogram of my very first baby. It was bittersweet, actually. I’ve always dreamt of this moment happening with my husband and my mom standing near the examination table as we looked on at the screen and smiled with happy tears in our eyes. But that wouldn’t happen. I would have to desperately settle with my two best friends out of fear.

Speaking of those two, not only were they late but they had yet to call or text me to tell me that they would be. It wasn’t until I was settled on the table and inside of a gown that was brought to me that the door had come open but it wasn’t the doctor who had entered. I flared my nostrils and folded my arms. He had some nerve to step foot anywhere near me. Maybe it was the pregnancy hormones but I was becoming more and angrier by the second.

And… you know what? I realized that we used to be one in the same because we shared the same pain. Now we’re just so different that I wouldn’t give a fuck if you got hit by a moving bus and a trailer tractor.”

“Did you just wish death upon me?”

“Call it what you want but I’m not about to put my baby through anything that you’ve put me through. I’m not going to have my kid to be pushed away because they told you that they love you. I’m not going to have my baby put on the backburner for some drug business. I went through all of that and I’m not—”

“Shut the fuck up and listen to me.”

“No, you shut the fuck up. I had a chance at living a normal and boring life with a guy who was making something of himself. What did I choose? I chose to let you keep my heart, and you ended up smashing it onto concrete. Well not anymore, Dominic. Take your high yellow ass back to wherever it is that you came from. And as a matter of fact,
