CHAPTER 61

There were just too many. We didn’t expect for so many to find their way to us here, and we were horrifically outnumbered. The bodies piled up around us, some aflame and others still grasping and twitching. I was beginning to feel drained, the warm serenity that flowed through me earlier disappeared entirely.

As I’d often done in battle before, I called on my wolf to reinforce me. Her spirit, her dominance, her strength to persevere—I needed them now.

The reinforcement began as a trickle; a small bubble of energy that rose somewhere in my chest, puddling slowly outward. It came faster and faster, spreading from me through the connection I felt to the others, a wellspring of strength and courage and power.

With suddenly renewed energy, Rowan took out three wraiths to my right, just as Stig sent a hissing head rolling away.

“I have an idea,” Emory called aloud. “It’s a little macabre, but-”

“Stop dithering and spill it!” Stig grunted.

“Chop the arm off that one and hand it to me.”

If Stig found that command odd, he didn’t react.

He simply separated the still-grasping limb from the torso of the wraith he’d just killed and handed the dissected body part to Emory.

Grabbing it by the wrist, Emory held the cut end of the arm over a nearby fire, and when it lit, launched it into the oncoming crowd.

The effect was immediate; the wraiths shrieked, a burst of flame spreading from the impact zone. Their bodies packed so closely together that the fire jumped quickly from one dry, undead creature to the next.

Taking the cue from Emory, the rest of us copied him. Chopping undead bodies, weaponizing them with fire, and launching them into the surrounding throng of blood-crazed monsters. It wasn’t long before the wraiths were more aflame than not. Once lit up, they scrambled wildly, attempting to escape the burn without understanding what was hurting them. Pressing against each other just spread more fire, and those trying to escape one flaming beast ran straight into another one. Soon they were trapped in growing rings of fire starting at the still-burning gel that surrounded us and outer rings that were started from our weaponized body parts.

Emory wasn’t wrong; it was macabre. Even though we were accustomed to killing wraiths and burning them, this felt different. They weren’t beheaded; they were still completely whole. I knew it was no different from what we normally did, but somehow this felt more vicious.

Of course, our problem now was defending ourselves from wild, burning wraiths that continued to run at us. Whether they were simply trying to put themselves out or still trying to drink our blood, there were still plenty left to fight.

But the press of the attack was over. The ones who made it to our defensive circle were no longer too numerous to fight. We held them off, taking out ever shrinking numbers, as the sky gradually began to lighten. I couldn’t tell if it was real or my eyes were just playing tricks on me at first.
