Even after the Peenemünde raid, the Germans managed to test another rocket. On August 22, a rocket with a dummy warhead that was supposed to land in the sea crashed instead on a Danish island, where it was retrieved by the naval officer in charge of the island. According to Martin Gilbert, Lieutenant-Commander Hasager Christiansen took pictures of the rocket and succeeded in passing them to the British. He was subsequently arrested by the Germans and tortured. Members of the Danish resistance spirited him out of the hospital where heâd been sent and helped him escape to Sweden. Britain awarded him the Distinguished Service Cross.
