Type 2 diabetes accounts for most cases of diabetes, but there are other types. Diabetes mellitus type 1 used to be called childhood diabetes and insulin-dependent diabetes (see Chapter 17). Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas and often occurs after a childhood infection. Other forms of diabetes are diabetes insipidus (in-SIP-id-uhs), which is due to a problem with the kidneys, and gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy.
