You can position a reflector where needed and angle it as desired by having an assistant hold the reflector and aim it for you. This is particularly good when you are tracking a moving subject. You have to rehearse the tracking a few times to get it right during the actual shoot. With static subjects, you can mount the reflector on a light stand.

Karl’s Tips

If your budget is tight, you can make your own reflectors. You can find white foam core board at many art supply stores. A stronger and more rigid version is sold under the brand name Gatorfoam. It is a bit harder to find, but it holds up better, which makes up for its higher cost. You can glue aluminum foil to the board if you want a silver reflector. The shiny side will be more specular and the dull side a bit more diffuse.
