When did you begin your project?

May 31, 2007. [This particular house] is a low-cost alternative and natural building hybrid. It is off the grid, meaning its power comes from the sun; its water is harvested off the roof when it rains; and its heat — or some of the heat — is produced via passive solar design (heat from the sun with propane backup). The roof is pretty conventional, though the walls are mostly natural building materials. The foundation is earthbag on a rubble trench. The walls are all a variation of earth, sand, straw, and wood. Techniques used for the wall systems were straw bale, light clay, earthbag, and cob. Every surface has been covered with a generous amount of earthen plaster.
