Stinging nettle has a bad reputation because when touched the hairs inject histamine and other substances that cause pain. If collected with caution, this versatile plant can be used for food, medicine, magick, and even textiles. Stinging nettle rash was used as a relief for joint pain. Once the first pain and itch of the stinging subsides, it relieves the inflammation of the joints, and with it, the pain. Nowadays, there are creams that contain stinging nettle and have a similar effect without the rash. Nettle also has diuretic properties and is a natural source of sodium and vitamin C.

Nettle prefers a moist and rich soil, with 1 foot (30 cm) between each plant. Harvest stinging nettle carefully, as the stingers can pierce thin fabric. To eliminate the hairs, blanch or crush the leaves before using them. Stinging nettle can cause allergic reactions and should be avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women.
