CHAPTER 10
An hour later, Claire was home in her pajamas, watching Itâs a Wonderful Life from the middle, where sheâd left off the night before. She was digging into the first of two pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream that sheâd set down on the coffee table in front of the couch.
Looking at them, she thought that she really should just start buying ice cream in the half gallon sized containers. Or better yet, those massive tubs of vanilla and chocolate that people got for kidsâ birthday parties. At the rate her love life was going, she would be eating more ice cream in the future.
Kitty had tried to help her when the phone call with Jake Robinson had ended. Of course, sheâd only heard Claireâs side of the call, but she hadnât really needed to know what Jake had said to know that Claireâs expectations hadnât come anywhere close to being met.
Sheâd walked Claire home and promised to deliver her a few chapters of her book in the morning to show that she was keeping her end of the bargain. None of that mattered to Claire after the most deflating phone call sheâd been on in a long while.
The call sheâd gotten from her parents about her sister Hollyâs move to Los Angeles had been more deflating, but that had been years earlier. That call was different because Claire had an inkling of what was going to be discussed. She knew what the news was going to be and why. The writing had been on the wall for years at that point, and it was only a matter of time before her sister could get enough cash to split town without having to look back. What had made that phone call so rough was the fact that her sister hadnât called herself to make her plans known to Claire. Claire had found out the official news from her parents the day after Holly left. That had stung beyond belief and had left a distance between the two of them that was more than the physical separation of the landmass they inhabited.
The phone call with Jake Robinson had been such a letdown because sheâd allowed herself to become excited about the notion of a date with the devilishly handsome man. Despite her initial apprehension, sheâd picked up the phone because she felt an assurance that he was going to say yes to her request. How could he not after sheâd heard from the woman she thought was his mother?
Suddenly, Claire sat up and set the second pint of ice cream down on the table between herself and the TV. The movie was just getting into the scene at the dance where George Bailey is reacquainted with his future wife, Mary. Claire raised an eyebrow as she watched George shift his fixation on the flirtatious blond to his future wife. Heâd had his mind on one thing and yet ended up on a completely different path. In the scene just
