CHAPTER 15

It was snowing by the time Olivia and Brett left the auction. They drove back to Manhattan mostly in silence. To distract herself from her pulsing desire, Olivia checked the weather on her phone, noticing she had four texts: two from Emily and two from Andrew. She didn’t read either. She called the airlines to check on her flight, scheduled the following afternoon, and she was told that most likely it would be cancelled. They suggested she call them in the morning and check the website that night. Resigned, Olivia made reservations on the first plane out of La Guardia on Monday afternoon.

Minutes later, Brett looked at her. “Are you still mad at me?”

“I’m not mad at you, Brett. I just don’t know what to say. I’m completely overwhelmed.”

“Say you’ll have dinner with me tonight.”

“I can’t. I tentatively made a dinner date.”

“With that guy you told me about? The guy you left your husband for?”

Olivia didn’t look at him. “Yes.”

Brett folded his arms, thinking. “Okay, then come back to my place now.”

Olivia snapped him a look. She swallowed. She thought. She turned away and stared out the window, seeing nothing.

Brett took her hand and whispered. “I want to make love to you, Olivia. If that’s too bold, then okay, so be it. I’m a bold, impulsive guy and you, Olivia, turn me on. Since I met you, you’re all I think about. Come back with me.”

Olivia turned to stare at him, feeling her breath deepen. It had been so long since she’d felt desired. It had been so long since she’d felt a man explore her body. It had been so long since she’d wanted a man to make love to her, and Brett was a gorgeous man, an exciting man, a wonderfully unpredictable man. She felt far from home—far from the pain and grief and loss—so far from Walton, Kentucky and her old, stale life. If only for a few days, she could escape and be someone else. She could be the girl she’d once been—the free and impulsive artist she’d been at 19 years old.

She heard herself say “Yes.”

Brett’s duplex 3-bedroom apartment was on the 35th floor of a luxury building that was just off Columbus Circle. It had a glorious view of Central Park and the New York City skyline and it was filled with spacious luxury: white and black contemporary furniture, polished wood floors, a marble bathroom with golden fixtures and a gleaming modern kitchen.

Olivia stood in the living room, gazing out the floor-to-ceiling window into the moving gray sky. Her arms were folded tightly across her chest. It had begun to snow, little dancing flecks obscuring the world and glazing the trees of Central Park. Brett hung up their coats, and she heard him walk slowly toward her.

“What a view,” she said quietly, trembling a little, wondering how they’d begin. “It’s magnificent. New York looks like a dream world from up here.”

“Yeah, I love it here, better than my place in Florida.”

Olivia slowly turned to face him.
